The principle about what is acceptable in worship is that we should “try to excel in gifts that build up the church” (1 Corinthians 14:12). Paul is quite clear that while we should not stop people from expressing themselves, “everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way”. However, all these things must be done in an orderly way and everyone should not shout out at once “for God is not a God of disorder but of peace”. He wrote that hymns, words of instruction, revelations from God, tongues and interpretations, all must be done for the strengthening of the church. Paul wrote about the principles of worship in 1 Corinthians 14:26-39. If such an interpretation is not forthcoming the speaker should keep quiet in church and speak to himself and to God (1 Corinthians 14:27-28). Indeed, if someone is speaking in an unknown language then the apostle Paul taught us that we must stop and wait for an interpretation so that the whole congregation can benefit.
The Bible never explicitly states that people should worship God by making loud noises with no meaning! However, all of them also refer to our speaking out or singing out praises to God in worship. Zephaniah 3:14 “Sing, O Daughter of Zion shout aloud, O Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O Daughter of Jerusalem!”.Īll these verses speak about making loud noises to the Lord. Shout aloud and sing for joy, people of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel among you”. Sing to the LORD, for he has done glorious things let this be known to all the world. Isaiah 12:4-6 “Give thanks to the LORD, call on his name make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted.
Psalm 98:4-6 “Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth, burst into jubilant song with music make music to the LORD with the harp, with the harp and the sound of singing, with trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn- shout for joy before the LORD, the King”. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song”. Psalm 95:1-2 “Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Psalm 81:1-2 “Sing for joy to God our strength shout aloud to the God of Jacob! Begin the music, strike the tambourine, play the melodious harp and lyre”.
